Cruise Wise Project
ISSEL NORD is the Lead Partner in the CRUISE WISE Project (Intelligent solutions for the air conditioning of cruise ships) which aims to create digital tools, with the use of artificial intelligence algorithms, for energy and maintenance optimization on board cruise ships.
The project is aimed at developing integrated energy management and maintenance strategies for cruise ship HVAC systems that: (i) make use of cruise ship operational profiles and information on passenger activities; (ii) balance the needs of energy efficiency (and comfort) and the needs of maintenance (and life cycle) of HVAC systems; (iii) introduce a new capacity for supervision and implementation of HVAC systems.
Qualitative objectives:
- we intend to prepare new supervision and management tools to improve the energy efficiency of HVAC systems and passenger comfort;
- we intend to prepare new supervision and management tools to improve the service level of the HVAC systems while reducing the costs for maintenance interventions;
- we intend to progressively create the conditions to transfer these experiences to the management and maintenance of other systems in the ship system, enhancing the relationships and experience carried out within the CRUISE WISE project.
Quantitative objectives:
- it is assumed that the improvement in energy efficiency can be quantified as a minimum of 10% on a typical winter cruise profile and a minimum of 20% on a typical summer cruise profile;
- it is assumed that the improvement in the service level translates into a 10% reduction in the failure rate of HVAC system components and in a virtual elimination of the estimated failure rate of air handling units;
- it is also assumed that these quantitative objectives can be progressively improved with the increase in user experience and the collection of data on the actual functioning of the systems.
In support of the quantitative and qualitative objectives, the project aims to achieve the following specific objectives:
- mapping of application scenarios and technological trends regarding HVAC systems;
- recommendations for the installation of “Internet of Cruise Things” solutions for the supervision of HVAC systems and recommendations for the opportunistic integration of other data to support management strategies;
- automation solutions for implementing energy management strategies for HVAC systems;
- automation solutions for implementing maintenance strategies for HVAC systems;
- automation solutions for the implementation of “integrated strategies” of energy management and maintenance;
- “auditing” systems for evaluating the performance and effectiveness of strategies.
The Project is co-financed through the 2021 – 2027 ERDF Regional Program of the Liguria Region, Priority 1, Specific Objective 1.1: Develop and strengthen research and innovation capacity and the introduction of advanced technologies, Action 1.1.1: Enhancement and support for research, also in collaboration with research centers, universities and GIs, into technological product and process innovation and technological transfer, as a driver of regional development and strengthening the competitiveness of the territory.
